Miyazaki Prefecture has been the number one producer of cedar in Japan for 33 consecutive years (as of 2024).
Among them, Obi cedar is a type of cedar grown near Nichinan City in the southeastern part of Miyazaki Prefecture.
Afforestation activities began in the Obi domain about 400 years ago.
About Obi cedar
Elastic and lightweight
Obi cedar is rich in resin, giving it elasticity lightweight properties, and high strength, which made it popular for shipbuilding (shell plating) during the Edo Period (17-19th century). It is also known for being moisture-resistant, decay-resistant, and having excellent bending strength.
High strength
Although cedar is generally known as a relatively soft wood with weaker strength, Obi cedar boasts high strength among cedar varieties. The promotion of new wood structural material like CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) allows its expected use in various medium to large scale structures where strength required.
Resistance to Termites
The terpenes found in the oil of cedar have a repellent effect on insects such as termites and are also effective against mites and cockroaches. In addition, the water-soluble components have been recognized for their antiviral properties and deodorizing effects.
Pleasant Aroma
Cedar essential oil is used as an aromatherapy or essential oil. The refreshing scent of cedar, known as phytoncide, has a calming effect that relaxes the body and soothes the mind.
